How West Cork hotels can win more direct bookings

6 min read·21 August 2026

Every direct booking keeps the OTA commission in your pocket. Here is how to win more of them.

Every booking that comes through Booking.com or Expedia costs a West Cork hotel or guesthouse between 15% and 18% in commission. On a €180 room that is roughly €27 to €32 gone before you have changed a single bed. The online travel agents are useful for filling gaps and reaching new guests, but leaning on them for every booking is expensive. The goal is not to ditch them, it is to win more bookings directly.

The real cost of OTA commission

Put numbers on it. Say a guesthouse near Bantry does 600 room-nights a year through the OTAs at an average of €150, with 16% commission. That is €14,400 handed over every year. Shift even a third of those bookings to direct and you keep close to €4,800, year after year. That is a real salary line, not a rounding error, and it is the strongest argument for investing in your own website.

Make booking direct genuinely easier

Guests book direct when it is as easy as the OTA, not harder. That means a fast, mobile booking engine on your own site, live availability, clear prices and no dead ends. If your website sends people to a phone number or a contact form while Booking.com offers instant confirmation, you will lose every time. Match the convenience first, then give them a reason to prefer you.

Own the searches the OTAs cannot

When someone types your name, a wedding at your venue, or 'guesthouse Schull with sea view', that is your traffic to win. Make sure your own website ranks first for your name and shows up for the specific things you offer that the big platforms flatten into a category. The OTA can sell 'a room in West Cork'. Only you can sell your room, your breakfast and your harbour.

Reviews and photography do the persuading

Guests comparing you to the place down the road in Kinsale decide on photos and reviews. Invest in real photography of the rooms, the breakfast and the view, not tired stock. Gather reviews on Google as well as the OTAs so your own listing looks as strong as your Booking.com one. People trust other people, so put that proof where they will see it.

Give them a reason to book direct

Rate parity rules often stop you undercutting the OTA on room price, but you can add value they cannot match: a free breakfast upgrade, late checkout, a bottle of something local, or the best rooms held for direct guests. Say clearly on your site, 'Best rate and a few extras when you book with us direct'. Most guests will choose the hotel over the middleman if you make the choice obvious.

Build an email list of past guests

Your past guests are your cheapest bookings. Someone who loved a weekend in Castletownbere last summer is far more likely to return than a cold stranger, and reaching them costs you nothing but a well-written email. Collect addresses at check-in and through the booking, then send a short seasonal note: autumn breaks, Christmas, a quiet-midweek offer. Every booking that comes back this way pays zero commission.

Direct bookings are where the margin lives. If you run a hotel or guesthouse in West Cork and want more of them, see how we help hotels and guesthouses or talk to us about your site.
