The small-business SEO checklist: 40 points, no fluff

12 min read·SEO

A practical, prioritised SEO checklist you can actually work through yourself, with no jargon and no fluff, in the order that gets results. Forty points, grouped so you always know what to do next.

How to use this checklist

SEO can feel like an endless list of things you are supposedly doing wrong. It is not. It is a sequence. Get the foundations right first, then local, then content, then authority. Doing them in order matters, because there is no point earning links to a slow site nobody can navigate.

Work top to bottom. Do not move to the next section until the one above is genuinely done. Most small businesses that do just the first two sections properly outrank competitors who dabble in all four.

Foundations: do these first

  • Your site loads in under three seconds on mobile.
  • It is fully mobile-friendly and easy to use on a phone.
  • It is secure (the padlock, https). If not, this is urgent and quick to fix.
  • Google Search Console is set up and verified.
  • Analytics (such as Google Analytics 4) is installed so you can see what works.
  • Every page has a unique, descriptive title tag and meta description.
  • Your site has a logical structure and an XML sitemap submitted to Google.
  • There are no accidental 'noindex' tags hiding your pages from Google.
  • Your URLs are clean and readable (yoursite.ie/services, not yoursite.ie/?p=213).
  • You have no broken links or dead pages sending visitors to errors.

Local: if you serve an area (most SMEs do)

  • Google Business Profile claimed, verified and one hundred percent complete.
  • Your business name, address and phone number are identical everywhere online.
  • A dedicated page for each main service, naming your town and region naturally.
  • A clear contact page with full address and an embedded map.
  • Listings in the main relevant Irish and industry directories.
  • A steady, ongoing flow of genuine customer reviews, with replies to each.
  • Location and service named naturally in your homepage and key titles.

Content: the long game that compounds

  • Pages that directly answer the real questions your customers ask.
  • One clear primary topic per page, written for humans first.
  • Helpful headings that break content into scannable sections.
  • Internal links connecting related pages to each other.
  • Descriptive alt text on images (helps accessibility and search).
  • A simple, sustainable publishing rhythm you can actually keep (even monthly).
  • Old, thin or outdated pages improved or merged rather than left to rot.
  • Content that genuinely helps, not keyword-stuffed filler.

Authority: later, and slowly

  • Links and mentions earned from reputable, relevant websites.
  • Local partnerships, sponsorships and press that come with a mention.
  • Being genuinely useful or newsworthy so others want to link to you.
  • A tidy, natural link profile; never buy spammy links, they are a liability.
  • Listings and profiles on the platforms that matter in your industry.

Review and maintain: monthly

  • Check Search Console for errors, coverage and which queries bring visitors.
  • See which pages are working and do more of what works.
  • Fix anything broken: dead links, slow pages, wrong information.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile fresh with photos, posts and review replies.
  • Refresh your best pages periodically so they stay accurate and competitive.

If you only do five things

Short on time? These five, done properly, will out-perform most competitors:

  1. Make the site fast and mobile-friendly.
  2. Complete your Google Business Profile and get reviews flowing.
  3. Give every main service its own page, naming your area.
  4. Set up Search Console and analytics so you can see reality.
  5. Publish one genuinely useful page a month, answering a real customer question.

The takeaways

  • SEO is a sequence: foundations, then local, then content, then authority.
  • Fix speed, mobile and security before anything else.
  • Local basics (Google Business Profile, reviews, service pages) are the fastest wins.
  • Write for humans, one topic per page, on a rhythm you can keep.
  • Earn authority slowly and honestly; never buy spammy links.
