Website mistakes that cost West Cork businesses customers

5 min read·29 July 2026

Five common failings that quietly send customers to your competitors, and how to fix them.

Most West Cork businesses do not lose customers online because of one big disaster. They lose them to a handful of small, fixable mistakes that quietly send people to a competitor. The good news is that once you can name them, most are cheap and quick to fix. Here are the seven we see most often, and exactly what to do about each.

1. It loads too slowly

A page that takes more than a few seconds on a phone loses a large share of visitors before they see a word. Given the patchy mobile signal around Bantry, Schull and the peninsulas, a heavy site is even more punishing here than in a city. The fix: compress your images, cut plugins you do not use, add caching and get decent hosting. That alone often halves the load time without changing how the site looks.

2. It is not mobile-friendly

Well over half your visitors are on a phone, often a visitor looking up your hours or menu on the move. If they have to pinch and zoom, or a button is too small to tap, they leave. The fix: a properly responsive design that reflows cleanly to a small screen, with big tappable buttons and text you can read without squinting. Test it on your own phone, not just your laptop.

3. It is hard to contact or book

If your phone number is not tappable, your address has no map, or booking means digging through three pages, you are making people work to give you money. Many will not bother. The fix: put a tappable phone number, a clear booking or contact button, and a map on every page. The single most important action on your site should never be more than one tap away.

4. It looks dated

A site that clearly has not been touched since 2015 makes people quietly wonder whether you are still going and whether you take pride in your work. In a place where reputation travels fast, that impression matters. The fix: a clean, current design with good photography and clear fonts. You do not need flashy, you need present and cared-for.

5. It is invisible on Google

If you do not appear when someone searches for your service near your town, the site might as well not exist. The fix: a complete Google Business Profile, your town named naturally through your pages, and a steady flow of reviews. This is the work that puts you in the map pack where the calls come from.

6. The value proposition is unclear

This is the quiet killer. A visitor lands on your homepage and cannot tell within a few seconds what you do, who you do it for, and why they should pick you. Vague slogans and stock photos leave them guessing, and guessing visitors leave. The fix: say it plainly at the top of the page. A cafe in Clonakilty is better served by fresh coffee and proper brunch on Pearse Street, seven days than by a clever tagline nobody understands. Lead with the plain truth of what you offer.

7. There is no call to action

Even a beautiful, fast site fails if it never asks the visitor to do anything. People need to be told the next step. The fix: decide the one action you want, book a table, request a quote, ring us, and make it the clear, repeated call to action down the page. Do not make people hunt for how to become your customer. Tell them, and make it easy.

Run a quick self-audit

You can check most of this yourself in fifteen minutes. Be honest, and use your phone, because that is what your customers use.

  1. On your phone, off wifi, time how long your homepage takes to become usable.
  2. Try to book or contact yourself. Count the taps. Is your number tappable?
  3. Search Google for your service plus your town. Do you appear on the map?
  4. Show your homepage to someone who does not know your business and ask them what you do. If they hesitate, your value proposition is unclear.
  5. Run our website health scorecard for a plain-English score across all of these.

None of these are hard to fix once you can see them. If your self-audit turned up a few, get in touch with Mizen Studio and we will tell you honestly which ones are actually costing you customers and what it takes to put them right.
