Getting found by tourists: SEO for West Cork hospitality

7 min read·14 August 2026

Visitors plan their trip online, weeks ahead. Here is how to be the business they find and book.

A tourist planning a trip to West Cork does not search the way you would. They do not type your business name, because they have never heard of it. They type 'things to do in Bantry', 'best seafood Baltimore', 'dog-friendly beaches near Clonakilty'. SEO for hospitality here is about being the answer to those questions, in the moment someone is deciding where to spend their holiday and their money.

Think like a visitor, not an owner

You know your business inside out, which is exactly why it is hard to see it as a stranger does. A visitor from Dublin or Dusseldorf searches by need and place: 'family hotel West Cork', 'kayaking Lough Hyne', 'where to eat Schull'. Write your pages around those real phrases rather than internal language. If your website only talks about 'bespoke hospitality experiences', it will never meet the person typing 'nice pub lunch near Mizen Head'.

Front-load the season

The tourist searches for a July holiday back in February and March. If your site, your prices and your availability are not ready until June, you have missed the booking window entirely. Get your seasonal pages, offers and photos live early, and make sure last year's information is not still sitting there. The businesses that win the summer did their SEO in the spring.

Reviews win the comparison

Visitors trust other visitors. Before booking, they read reviews on Google and TripAdvisor and they scan your photos. A steady flow of recent, genuine reviews lifts you in search and closes the sale. Ask every happy guest to leave one, and keep your Google profile as strong as your listings on the big platforms. Ten fresh reviews this month beat a hundred from three years ago.

Fast and mobile, always

Your visitor is on a phone, often on patchy rural signal somewhere near Castletownbere. If your site is slow or awkward on mobile, they are gone before it loads. Compress your images, keep the design clean, and test it on an actual phone on mobile data, not just office wifi. Speed is not a technical nicety here, it is whether the booking happens at all.

Write the trip, not just the room

The visitor planning a week away wants to picture the whole trip. A short guide on your site, 'Three days in West Cork from our door', or 'Our five favourite walks near Schull', pulls in people at the dreaming stage and quietly positions you as the local expert. This kind of content ranks for all the 'things to do' searches the booking platforms cannot touch, and it brings people to you first.

Understand the booking window

Different guests plan on different clocks. Families booking the summer holiday decide months ahead. Couples chasing a last-minute weekend in Kinsale book on the Thursday. Your website should serve both: clear future availability for the planners, and an easy, obvious way to grab a room this weekend for the spontaneous. Knowing who books when lets you time your offers to land exactly when people are looking.

Catch the Wild Atlantic Way traffic

Huge numbers of visitors follow the Wild Atlantic Way down the coast, and they search around the route: 'places to stay Wild Atlantic Way West Cork', 'stops near Mizen Head'. Mention the route, the landmarks and the nearby stretches naturally on your pages, because that is the map in the visitor's head. Being on that mental route, and in those searches, puts you in front of a stream of traffic already heading your way.

A word on language and local links

A large share of West Cork's visitors come from abroad, so keep your English plain and easy for a non-native reader, with clear prices, distances and directions. Getting listed on trusted local tourism sites and asking nearby businesses to link to you also helps: a link from a respected regional site tells Google you are a real, rooted part of the place, and that reputation lifts everything else you do.

Getting found by tourists is a system, not a slogan, and it pays back every season. See how we help tourism and activity businesses, hotels and guesthouses and restaurants, or talk to us about your summer.
