Where should a West Cork business spend its first marketing euro?

5 min read·20 June 2026

Before ads, before anything clever, get the foundations right. Here is the order.

Marketing advice for small businesses usually arrives as a long list of things you should be doing, all at once, with no sense of what comes first. That is how budgets get wasted. For a West Cork business with limited time and money, the order matters far more than the length of the list. Spend your first € on the thing that returns the most, prove it works, then move to the next.

Here is the order we would follow, and just as importantly, why each step comes where it does and how you know it is time to move on.

1. Google Business Profile, first and free

Your first € should cost nothing but an afternoon. A complete Google Business Profile is the highest-return marketing a local business can do, because it puts you in front of people who are already searching for what you sell, in your town, right now. It shows in the map pack, carries your hours, photos and reviews, and often earns the click before a website is even involved.

It costs nothing and it returns customers within days. There is no argument for spending on anything else while this sits half-done. Our Google Business Profile guide shows exactly how to set it up. You know you have this handled when your profile is complete, you are getting review requests out, and you appear when you search your own category near your town.

2. A fast, mobile-first website

Once people can find you, they will check you out, and most of them do it on a phone. A slow or clumsy site loses them at that second step. Your next € goes into a fast, clear, mobile-first website that loads in a couple of seconds and answers the obvious questions: what you do, where you are, how to get in touch.

This is not a vanity project. It is the place every other channel sends people, so it has to convert. A simple, well-built site for a West Cork SME is a sensible investment, not a big-agency one. Use our website cost calculator to get a realistic figure before you commit. Move on once your site is fast on a phone, says clearly what you do, and makes contact easy.

3. Local SEO basics

With a profile and a site in place, the next € makes them work harder through local SEO: the words on your pages, your town named naturally, consistent name, address and phone across the web, and links from other local sites. This is what lifts you above competitors who stopped at step one.

Local SEO compounds. It is slower to show than a complete profile but it builds a position that is hard for a rival to knock you out of. Our West Cork SEO page explains what it involves. You are ready for the next step when you are ranking for your main services in your town and the enquiries are steady.

4. Reviews, deliberately and always

Reviews are not a step you finish, they are a habit you start here and never stop. They lift your ranking and they close the sale for the next reader, and they cost nothing but the discipline of asking. Once your foundations are in place, put a simple system behind reviews: ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to each one.

This comes before paid ads for a reason. A steady stream of genuine reviews makes every other € you spend work harder, because the traffic you send to your listing converts better. Ads without reviews is pouring water into a leaky bucket.

5. Paid ads, last and only when ready

Only now, with a complete profile, a fast site, solid local SEO and a flow of reviews, does paid advertising make sense. At this point ads pour fuel on a fire that is already lit. The traffic lands on a site that converts, a listing that reassures, and a business that ranks, so every € works instead of leaking away.

Start small, measure what a customer costs you against what they are worth, and scale only what pays. Ads are an amplifier, not a foundation.

The most common mistake: starting with ads

Almost every business that wastes money starts at step five. They pay for ads before the profile, the site, the SEO and the reviews are in place, so they send hard-won clicks to a slow site and a thin listing, and the money vanishes with nothing to show. Then they conclude that marketing does not work, when in truth they simply ran the order backwards.

The other frequent error is stopping at step one. A great Google profile is a brilliant start, but on its own it leaves growth on the table. The steps build on each other, and each one makes the next more effective.

  • Do not pay for reach you cannot convert, so fix the site before you buy traffic
  • Do not chase every channel at once, because spread-thin effort beats nothing but not much
  • Do measure each step before adding the next, so you always know what is working

Put it together

Spend your first € where it returns the most, prove it, then move up the ladder: profile, website, local SEO, reviews, then ads. Follow that order and a modest budget goes a long way. Jump to the end and even a big one disappears.
